The Game Producer's Career Journey - Press Start

Hello! Are you interested in how games are made? Curious about a career in game production? Curiosity is how my journey began too! With this blog, I intend to share all the material I use to mentor producers at various stages of their careers, making it available to everyone.

As a big RPG nerd, I like to think of your career journey as an adventure. You'll go on quests for knowledge, overcome great challenges, and gain new tools to help you along the way.

Career Progression

Let's look at progression. I've laid out the Producer Career Roadmap like a character's level progression in an RPG. You might be level 1, at the very beginning of your journey, learning about how games are developed. Or you could be in the middle of your game development adventure, looking for a quest that meets you at your current level! Wherever you are along your path, this blog is designed to deliver the information you need when you're ready for it.

  • Lvl 1-5: Beginner/Production Coordinator

  • Lvl 6-10: Associate Producer

  • Lvl 11-15: Producer 1

  • Lvl 16-20: Producer 2

  • Lvl 21-25: Senior Producer 1

  • Lvl 26-30: Senior Producer 2

  • Lvl 31-35: Lead Producer

  • Lvl 36-40: Executive Producer

  • Lvl 41-45: Production Director

  • Lvl 46-50: Studio Manager

Skill Focuses

The production position has three primary skill focuses. Let's think of these as our ability scores. Instead of Wisdom, Dexterity, and Constitution, we have People, Processes, and Product. Most people have a proficiency in one or two of these areas. You can self-assess and choose quests to build up the ones that aren't as strong.

  • People - This focus is on the individuals who make games. It covers how they communicate, make decisions, and prioritize tasks.

  • Process - Commonly referred to as hard skills, these are the tools you bring to the job.

  • Product - Understanding what you're making and what quality looks like is critical to doing this job well. These skills are all focused on comprehending your product.

The articles here will all have tags to guide you to information that will be helpful at your stage of the journey. I will be building this up over time, so if you have a question or don't see a subject covered that you're interested in, just let me know, and I'll move it up the queue.

You're on an exciting and rewarding career path! There are many twists and turns along the way, but the journey is worth it.
